The Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) provides skills cards for the plant sector of the Construction and allied industries. It was launched in 2003 and since then over 300,000 cards have been issued across 64 categories of plant and related occupations.

The CPCS card system serves as a reliable testament to an individual's competence and proficiency in operating specific plant machinery or equipment within the construction industry. Each card signifies a varying level of expertise, experience, and competency.

The National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) is a comparable alternative to CPCS, offering similar accredited training and recognition. However, distinctions include: • NPORS is generally more cost-effective than CPCS. • NPORS training can be completed on-site or at the training provider's location, while CPCS training is limited to certified centers. • CPCS cards are more widely accepted by employers, especially on larger contractor sites, compared to NPORS.
